NMN & VITAMIN B3 · EXPLAINED PROPERLY
NMN And Vitamin B3: The Niacin Flush Explained, And Why The Two Forms Are Not The Same
One form of B3 turns your face red for twenty minutes. The other does nothing of the sort. They carry identical authorised health claims and their published safety limits are ninety times apart — and NMN, the ingredient most people are actually looking for, has no claims at all.
IN SHORT
NMN is a vitamin B3 derivative (CAS 1094-61-7) sold on specification, because no health claims are authorised for it. Vitamin B3 itself comes in two forms: nicotinic acid, which flushes, and nicotinamide, which does not. Both carry the same six authorised claims. Pairing NMN with B3 is what makes any claim language available on an NMN product at all.
What NMN actually is
NMN stands for nicotinamide mononucleotide. It is a derivative of vitamin B3 — chemical formula C11H15N2O8P, molecular weight 334.22 g/mol, CAS number 1094-61-7. It occurs naturally in trace amounts in ordinary foods including broccoli, cabbage, avocado, edamame and tomatoes, generally at under 1mg per kilogram of food. You would struggle to eat your way to a meaningful amount.
In biochemistry NMN is described as a precursor in the NAD biosynthesis pathway. NAD is a coenzyme found in every living cell and involved in cellular metabolism. That is factual biology, not a product claim — and the distinction matters, because it is exactly the line most NMN marketing crosses.
There are no authorised health claims for NMN. None.
Not one claim for NMN appears on the GB Nutrition and Health Claims register. That means no UK seller can lawfully tell you what NMN does, supports, boosts or improves — and any listing that does is making an unauthorised claim.
So the only honest way to sell NMN is on specification: what is in it, in what form, at what purity, and who tested it. That is the standard you should hold every NMN product to, including ours.
Three things worth checking on any NMN product
1. Is it the beta form?
β-NMN is the stereoisomer that occurs naturally in human cells and in food. Lower-grade material can contain α-NMN or a mix of isomers — the same molecule by formula, but not the form the body produces. A specification that says beta, rather than just "NMN", is telling you something. One that doesn't may simply not know.
2. Who tested it, and did they publish numbers?
Most supplement certificates report heavy metals as "conforms" or "complies" — a pass mark with nothing behind it. That tells you the material met a limit, but not by how much. A certificate with actual measured figures from a named independent laboratory is a different document entirely.
3. What else is in the capsule?
Capsule size is a quick sanity check. A size 0 capsule holds roughly 530mg. If a product declares 500mg of NMN in a noticeably larger size 00 shell, which holds around 700mg, it is fair to ask what is occupying the difference. This is not proof of anything on its own — but it is a reasonable question, and a good seller will answer it.
NMN, NR and plain B3 — how they relate
These three get used almost interchangeably online, and they are not the same thing.
| Compound | CAS | Authorised claims |
|---|---|---|
| NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide) | 1094-61-7 | None |
| NR (nicotinamide riboside) | 1341-23-7 | None |
| Nicotinamide (B3) | 98-92-0 | Six |
| Nicotinic acid (B3) | 59-67-6 | Six |
NR sits one biosynthetic step earlier than NMN in the same pathway. Neither carries authorised claims. Plain vitamin B3 — in either of its two forms — is the only one of the four that does, which is why B3 turns up alongside NMN in so many combination products. It is not a filler. It is the ingredient that makes lawful claim language possible.
Now the flush — what it actually is
If you have taken a B3 supplement and gone suddenly hot and pink across the face and chest, you took nicotinic acid. If you felt nothing, you took nicotinamide.
Nicotinic acid triggers the release of prostaglandins in the skin. These signalling compounds widen the small blood vessels near the surface, so more blood flows close to the skin. The result is warmth, redness and often a prickling or tingling sensation across the face, neck, upper chest and sometimes the arms.
It usually begins ten to twenty minutes after taking it and passes within about two hours, often much sooner. It is not an allergic reaction and it is not a sign that anything has gone wrong.
Taking it on a full stomach is by far the biggest thing you can do to reduce it, because slower absorption blunts the peak. Alcohol and hot drinks work against you — both widen blood vessels themselves. Many people find it settles considerably over the first week or two.
| Nicotinic acid | Nicotinamide | |
|---|---|---|
| Also called | Niacin, flush niacin | Niacinamide, no-flush B3 |
| Causes flushing | Yes | No |
| Published upper level | 10 mg/day | 900 mg/day |
| Basis of that limit | Flushing | Liver effects at high intakes |
About that 10mg figure
If the published upper level for supplemental nicotinic acid is 10mg a day, how is nearly every nicotinic acid product on the market sold at 100mg or more?
Because of what that figure was derived from. It was set using flushing as the measured endpoint — the point at which a noticeable, unwanted, harmless effect appears. It was not derived from organ damage.
That makes it deliberately conservative, and it explains the apparent contradiction. It does not make it meaningless: it is the applicable reference level in Great Britain, and a product page that mentions no maximum at all is not being straight with you.
Where the real caution sits
There is no legal maximum for vitamins in UK food supplements. That means the protection on a high-strength product is the quality of its warnings, not compliance with a threshold.
Genuine concern with nicotinic acid attaches to sustained gram-level intakes, not a single modest daily dose. Liver effects are rare but real at those levels — which is why any nicotinic acid product should state a ceiling and mean it, and why "start low and build up" is advice we would treat carefully on this particular compound.
All six authorised niacin claims, explained
Niacin carries six authorised claims — considerably more than most nutrients. Most listings use two or three, usually because the rest are hard to explain. Here are all six in their exact approved wording, with what each actually means.
"Niacin contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism"
Niacin builds NAD and NADP, the coenzymes cells use to release energy from food. This covers that conversion process. It is not a stimulant and will not feel like caffeine.
"Niacin contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue"
The same underlying role — supporting normal energy production rather than creating extra.
"Niacin contributes to normal psychological function"
The brain's ordinary working processes: thinking, concentration, memory. Not a claim about mood, stress or anxiety.
"Niacin contributes to the normal function of the nervous system"
Nerve cells need niacin to signal properly and are among the most energy-hungry in the body. Maintaining, not enhancing.
"Niacin contributes to the maintenance of normal skin"
Skin cells renew quickly and depend on those same energy pathways. Keeping healthy skin healthy — not a claim about appearance or ageing.
"Niacin contributes to the maintenance of normal mucous membranes"
The moist linings of the mouth, nose and digestive tract. Fast-renewing cells again, same pathways.
Why these six? B3's role was characterised largely through deficiency research, and severe shortage shows up first in the skin, the linings of the digestive tract and mental clarity — very nearly the list above, plus the energy metabolism underpinning all of it.
The wording is fixed and cannot be reworded or improved upon. Anything that sounds more appealing than these phrases is an unauthorised claim — useful to know when comparing listings.
How we build ours
Our NMN and B3 Nicotinic Acid capsules hold 400mg of NMN and 100mg of nicotinic acid in a 500mg fill — two ingredients and a size 0 vegan HPMC shell, nothing else. The niacin side is what makes the six claims above available; the NMN is described by specification only, because nothing else would be lawful.
Measured, not "conforms"
Heavy metals in our NMN, measured by Eurofins — an independent UK laboratory — by ICP-MS:
Lead — 0.008 mg/kg · Cadmium — <0.001 mg/kg
Arsenic — 0.013 mg/kg · Mercury — <0.005 mg/kg
Purity 99.99% by HPLC, beta form. Certificates for both ingredients available on request. We encapsulate in house at our own 5 Star Food Hygiene rated facility.
How to take it, and who shouldn't
One capsule a day, in the morning, on a full stomach. Never more than one. Avoid alcohol and hot drinks around the time you take it. Keep the pack refrigerated — NMN degrades with heat and humidity.
Nicotinic acid is not for everyone
Do not take it if you have liver disease, an active stomach ulcer, gout, diabetes, unstable angina or a recent heart attack. Nicotinic acid is contraindicated in liver disease, is documented to activate peptic ulcers, competes with uric acid for removal by the kidneys, and can raise fasting blood sugar.
Speak to your GP first if you take statins, blood pressure medication, blood thinners or thyroid medication, drink more than moderately, or have a history of gallbladder problems.
Adults 18+ only. Not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
So which should you buy?
If the flush doesn't bother you — or you actively like knowing something is happening — nicotinic acid alongside NMN is the one.
If you would rather not turn pink at your desk, choose nicotinamide. Same vitamin, same six authorised claims, no flush, and a far higher upper level. You give up nothing but the flush.
If you only want NMN, buy it on its own and judge it on specification — beta form, stated purity, and measured contaminant figures from a named laboratory.
