✅ Food supplement — not a medicine. Not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Berberine has no authorised claims on the GB Nutrition and Health Claims Register, so no health claims are made for this product anywhere on this page. Food supplements should not replace a varied and balanced diet.

No Authorised Claims Does Not Mean No Research

You will notice this page tells you nothing about what berberine does. That is not because nothing is known — berberine is one of the most studied plant alkaloids in the world. It is because getting a health claim authorised in Great Britain is a process most ingredients never go through.

1,000+ yrs

of traditional use in Chinese and Ayurvedic practice

5–10 yrs

typical time to take a claim through authorisation

£100K+

typical cost of a single claim dossier

Authorisation is funded by whoever stands to profit from the claim, and no company will spend six figures on an ingredient any competitor can then sell. So botanicals like berberine sit outside the register regardless of the evidence behind them. The lawful position is that we sell you a specification and you make your own decisions — which is what the rest of this page does.

Quick Answer

Berberine 10:1 Extract Tablets supply 100mg of concentrated botanical extract in a small 8mm uncoated tablet. The 10:1 ratio means ten parts of dried plant material were concentrated into one part of extract, so each tablet is equivalent to 1,000mg of dried herb.

If you are looking to buy berberine UK stock, the first thing worth understanding is that the milligram figure on a berberine label can mean three different things depending on the seller. This page explains which one applies here, because that is the difference between comparing products properly and comparing headline numbers that are not measuring the same thing.

Berberine holds no authorised claims on the GB Nutrition and Health Claims Register, so this page describes the specification, the format and the sourcing — not effects. That is the lawful way to sell a botanical in the UK, and we would rather be straight about it than dress up a supplement as something it is not.

Stock is held at our own Southend-on-Sea facility, which holds a 5 Star Food Hygiene Rating awarded by Southend-on-Sea City Council. Orders placed before 3:30pm Monday to Friday dispatch the same working day.

What The 1,000mg Actually Means

Each tablet contains 100mg of a 10:1 extract. That is equivalent to 1,000mg of dried herb.

It is not 1,000mg of isolated berberine. A 10:1 extract is a concentrate: ten parts of dried plant material reduced to one part of extract. The 1,000mg figure describes how much raw herb went into making the 100mg you are taking.

Plenty of berberine listings quote a large milligram number without saying which of these it refers to. We would rather you knew, even though the honest version is the smaller-sounding one.

What Is Berberine?

Berberine is a naturally occurring isoquinoline alkaloid, CAS 633-65-8, found across several unrelated plant families including Berberis, Coptis, Hydrastis and Phellodendron species (Neag et al., 2018). It is the compound responsible for the deep yellow colour of the roots and bark of those plants.

It has a long documented history of use in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic practice (Och et al., 2020). In the UK today it is supplied strictly as a food supplement under food law, overseen by the Food Standards Agency, and is not a licensed medicine.

Commercial berberine reaches the market in two quite different forms. Concentrated botanical extracts, expressed as a ratio such as 10:1, contain berberine alongside the plant's other constituents. Isolated berberine hydrochloride is the purified alkaloid, usually supplied at a stated assay percentage. This product is the first kind.

How To Compare Berberine Products

Three different numbers get printed on berberine labels, and they are not interchangeable. Work out which one you are looking at before comparing on price.

What the label says What it means
"100mg 10:1 extract, equivalent to 1,000mg" Dried herb equivalent. 100mg of concentrate from 1,000mg of plant material. This is our product.
"Berberine HCl 97%, 500mg" Isolated alkaloid with a stated assay. A much higher berberine content per milligram.
"Berberine 1,000mg" with nothing else Ambiguous. Could be extract weight, herb equivalent or isolated berberine. Ask the seller which.

Neither format is better in the abstract — a whole-plant concentrate and an isolate are different things people choose for different reasons. What matters is knowing which you are buying, and that is exactly what a lot of listings make difficult.

First-Time Buyer Guide

Start with one tablet daily, taken with a meal. Berberine is well known for causing digestive discomfort in some people when started abruptly, and taking it with food rather than on an empty stomach is the standard way to reduce that. Stay at one tablet for a couple of weeks before considering the second.

If you take any prescribed medication, read the safety section further down before you order at all — this is one ingredient where checking first genuinely matters.

The smaller pack is the sensible first purchase. Once you know it agrees with you, the larger counts bring the per-tablet cost down.

Safety and Interactions

⚠ Read this before ordering if you take any prescribed medication.

Berberine is documented as interacting with drug-metabolising enzymes and transporters, notably CYP3A4 and P-glycoprotein (Neag et al., 2018). That means it has the potential to affect blood levels of a wide range of medicines. Speak to your GP or pharmacist before starting it if you take anything prescribed.

Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Not for under 18s. Seek advice first if you have liver or kidney disease.

Some people experience mild digestive discomfort when starting berberine — taking it with food and beginning at one tablet reduces the chance. Suspected adverse effects can be reported through the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 1,000mg mean on this product?

Each tablet contains 100mg of a 10:1 concentrated berberine extract. A 10:1 ratio means ten parts of dried plant material were concentrated into one part of extract, so 100mg of extract is equivalent to 1,000mg of dried herb. The 1,000mg figure is a dried herb equivalent, not 1,000mg of isolated berberine.

What is the difference between a 10:1 extract and berberine HCl?

A 10:1 extract is a concentrated botanical preparation containing berberine alongside the plant's other natural constituents. Berberine HCl is the isolated alkaloid, usually supplied at a high assay percentage. Products labelled with the same milligram figure can therefore contain very different amounts of berberine. Always check whether a figure refers to extract weight, dried herb equivalent, or isolated berberine.

How many tablets should I take?

One to two tablets daily with food, as stated on the label. Do not exceed the recommended intake.

Are there any authorised health claims for berberine?

No. Berberine has no authorised claims on the GB Nutrition and Health Claims Register, so no health claims are made for this product anywhere on this page. It is a food supplement, not a medicine.

How big are the tablets?

8mm, which is a small tablet and straightforward to swallow. They are uncoated.

Are the tablets suitable for vegans?

Yes. The tablets are suitable for both vegans and vegetarians and are non-GMO. They contain none of the 14 declarable allergens.

Why do the tablets contain bulking agents?

Tablets require bulking and compression agents to hold their shape. 100mg of active extract cannot be pressed into a tablet on its own, so microcrystalline cellulose and dicalcium phosphate make up the body of the tablet, with magnesium stearate and silicon dioxide as anti-caking agents. This is why we do not use a "no fillers" claim on tablet products.

When should I take it?

With food. Taking it alongside a meal is the usual approach and reduces the chance of digestive discomfort.

Can I take berberine with prescription medication?

Speak to your GP or pharmacist first. Berberine can interact with a number of medicines, including those metabolised by CYP3A4 and P-glycoprotein. This is important enough that you should not start it alongside any prescribed medicine without advice.

How fast is UK delivery and what are your returns?

Orders placed before 3:30pm Monday to Friday dispatch the same working day from our Southend-on-Sea facility. Free shipping on UK orders over £10. Unopened items can be returned within 30 days.

Can I subscribe and save?

Yes. Subscribe and Save applies a discount to every recurring order on a schedule you choose. You can skip, pause, change the frequency or cancel at any time from your account with no fee.

Can I spread the cost over three months?

Yes. Interest-free instalments are available at checkout on eligible orders, splitting the cost into three monthly payments with no interest and no fees when paid on time. Credit is provided by our third-party payment partner, subject to status. Full terms are shown at checkout.

Do you supply berberine tablets wholesale in the UK?

Yes. We supply berberine tablets in trade quantities from UK-held stock and have traded since 2016. Trade enquiries go through our contact page.

Can you provide a Certificate of Analysis for trade orders?

Yes. Batch-specific Certificates of Analysis are available on request for all trade and wholesale orders.

Do you offer white-label or private-label berberine?

Yes. We can supply white-label and private-label products to your own specification and branding, with in-house encapsulation for capsule formats.

What are your trade lead times?

Stocked lines dispatch the same working day. Bespoke white-label runs take longer depending on volume and packaging — contact us for a quotation.
