Does NMN Cause Cancer in Healthy People?
Short answer: No — current evidence does not support this.
Current evidence does not show that NMN causes cancer. No randomised controlled trial in humans has demonstrated that NMN supplementation causes tumour formation or increases cancer incidence. In long-term rodent research, mice treated with NMN did not develop more tumours than untreated animals.
This is the question that circulates most frequently in online discussions about NMN — and it's worth addressing clearly and honestly. The concern arises from a valid biological observation: cancer cells, like all cells, need NAD+ to survive and function. If NMN raises NAD+ levels, could it feed cancer cells? In theory, yes. In practice, the question is more nuanced.
Cancer is a complex, multifactorial disease, primarily driven by genetic mutations, environmental exposures and lifestyle factors — not the availability of NAD+. Like all cells, cancer cells rely on NAD+ for their growth and survival, but this does not mean NAD+ causes cancer. The same logic applies to glucose (sugar), oxygen, B vitamins, zinc and iron — all of which are essential for cell function and all of which cancer cells also depend on. We do not conclude that these cause cancer.
Human clinical evidence — including decades of research on NAD+ precursors like niacin, nicotinamide, NR and NMN — has found no association with increased cancer risk. Some studies have found the opposite — for example, a large Australian RCT found that nicotinamide supplementation significantly reduced the incidence of non-melanoma skin cancer.

Should Cancer Patients Avoid NMN?

A landmark peer-reviewed study published in Cancer Letters in February 2026 found that NMN, NR and nicotinamide (NAM) helped pancreatic cancer cells resist three standard chemotherapy drugs. This is the most important recent finding on this topic and is discussed in full below.
Why NAD+ Is the Problem — Not the Supplement Itself
To understand why NMN could be problematic during cancer treatment, you need to understand what chemotherapy is actually trying to do.
Most chemotherapy drugs work by damaging cancer cells' DNA and inducing apoptosis — programmed cell death. They create oxidative stress inside cancer cells, break DNA strands and trigger cell death signals. Cancer cells can hijack NAD+ fuel to power up their energy systems, repair DNA damage from chemotherapy and avoid the cell death that chemo triggers, allowing tumours to survive doses that should be lethal.

Among the compounds tested, NMN exhibited the strongest protective effect on cancer cells, enhancing resistance to oxaliplatin, 5-fluorouracil and gemcitabine in vitro. Mechanistically, NAD+ precursors promoted mitochondrial function, reduced oxidative stress and suppressed DNA damage and apoptosis in treated cancer cells — all contributing to chemotherapy resistance.
The team recommends routine screening of supplement use among cancer patients and calls for further clinical studies to better understand how NAD+ supplements interact with cancer therapies. The lead researcher advises patients to speak with their oncologist and care team about any supplements they are taking.

AACR Annual Meeting 2025 Abstract — NMN and UV-Induced Skin Cancer
Research presented at the American Association for Cancer Research Annual Meeting 2025 (Chicago, April 2025) investigated NMN supplementation in UV-induced skin cancer models, finding NMN enhanced proliferation and aggressiveness in UV-induced skin cancer. This is a preliminary abstract — not a full peer-reviewed publication — and should be interpreted cautiously. It does, however, add to the picture that in the presence of existing cancer, NMN may not be beneficial.

The research above is serious and should be taken seriously — but context matters:
The 2026 study focused on pancreatic cancer specifically. It does not confirm the same effect exists in all cancer types. Different cancers have different metabolic profiles. What applies to pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma may not apply uniformly across all malignancies — but the principle of NAD+ fuelling cancer cell survival is a general concern.
The study was conducted in laboratory cells and mouse models — not in human cancer patients. Laboratory findings do not always translate directly to human outcomes. Clinical trials in cancer patients are needed to confirm the effect at clinical doses. The study's authors themselves call for further clinical studies.
Some research shows NMN may be beneficial in certain cancer contexts. A 2024 study in MedComm found NMN reduced inflammatory cytokine levels and may protect against colorectal cancer development. A study in triple-negative breast cancer found NMN reduced tumour growth and metastasis. The picture is genuinely complex and cancer-type specific.
The complexity is precisely why cancer patients must not self-supplement. The interaction between NMN and cancer biology is cancer-type specific, treatment-specific and individual. Only your oncologist, who knows your specific cancer type, stage and treatment protocol, can advise you on whether any supplement is safe to take during treatment.

What This Means If You're Healthy and Take NMN
In healthy people with no known malignancy, NMN supplementation does not cause cancer. The evidence consistently shows NMN is safe for healthy adults at standard doses. Human clinical trials have found no carcinogenic signals. Mutagenicity testing has found no mutagenic activity. Long-term rodent studies show no increase in tumour formation.
NMN's role in supporting DNA repair mechanisms — via NAD+-dependent PARP enzymes and sirtuins — may actually contribute to cancer prevention by maintaining genomic stability. This is an area of active research.
