The authorised claims — and what they actually mean
Both nutrients in this formula carry authorised GB nutrition claims. The wording is fixed by law, which makes it precise but not always clear. Here is what each one means.
🦷 "Calcium is needed for the maintenance of normal teeth"
Calcium is a structural component of the mineralised tissue in teeth. The key words are "maintenance of normal" — it means supporting healthy teeth in staying healthy. It does not mean repairing, whitening, remineralising damage or treating any dental condition, and no supplement is authorised to claim that.
Calcium also carries "is needed for the maintenance of normal bones", which works on the same structural principle.
🦠 "Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of gums"
Gum tissue is largely collagen, and vitamin C is required by the enzymes that build it. This is the only authorised GB claim that names gums specifically — no other nutrient has one. That is the single reason vitamin C is in this formula rather than something else.
Vitamin C carries the same collagen claim for teeth as well, so it covers both. Again, "normal function" means supporting healthy tissue — not treating bleeding gums, gum disease or any dental condition. Those are matters for a dentist.

Vitamin C contributes to normal psychological function and to the normal functioning of the nervous system — the brain's and nerves' ordinary working processes. Not claims about mood or focus.
Calcium contributes to normal muscle function, normal neurotransmission, normal blood clotting, normal energy-yielding metabolism, the normal function of digestive enzymes, and has a role in the process of cell division and specialisation — calcium is a signalling mineral as well as a structural one.

Why these two nutrients
Most teeth-and-gum supplements are assembled from whatever sounds relevant. This one was built backwards from the claims register.
Four nutrients carry an authorised claim naming teeth — calcium, vitamin D, magnesium and phosphorus. Only one carries a claim naming gums, and that is vitamin C. So any product that wants to talk about gums in approved wording has to contain vitamin C. There is no alternative.
Calcium was chosen from the teeth group because it is the structural mineral in the tissue itself, and because it clears the claim threshold at a sensible serving. Between the two, the formula covers teeth twice and gums once, with nothing in the pot that is not pulling its weight.
Why citrate, and why two capsules
Calcium citrate is 20.3 to 23% elemental calcium. Calcium carbonate is about 40%. So carbonate would fit twice as much calcium into the same capsule — and we chose citrate anyway.
The reason is that carbonate needs stomach acid to be absorbed and citrate does not. That matters for older adults, for anyone taking a proton pump inhibitor such as omeprazole, and for anyone who takes a supplement away from food. Citrate is the more reliable choice across more people.
The cost of that decision is bulk. At around 21% elemental, one 600mg capsule cannot deliver enough calcium to reach the 15% NRV threshold the teeth claim requires — it lands at about 14%. So the serving is two capsules, which clears it at 27%. We would rather use two honest capsules than print a number the product does not deliver.
Elemental calcium is the figure that matters, and it is the one most listings leave out. A 1,000mg calcium citrate tablet contains around 203–230mg of actual calcium. Always check which number a seller is quoting.

Why we declare 215mg and not 223mg
Calcium citrate is not a fixed percentage. The technical specification gives a range of 20.3% to 23% elemental calcium, so 1,062mg of the compound delivers somewhere between 216mg and 244mg of actual calcium depending on the batch.
We declare at the bottom of that range. Every pot delivers at least what the label says, and most deliver more. Declaring the midpoint or the top would look better on paper and would be wrong on some batches — the same reason we use two capsules instead of printing an optimistic single-capsule figure.

How to take it
- Two capsules daily with water. Two capsules is one serving.
- Take them with food. Calcium is better absorbed with a meal and food reduces the chance of stomach upset.
- Leave a gap from medication — at least two hours either side.
- Check your combined intake if you already take another calcium supplement or a multivitamin containing calcium.
- Reseal the pot and store cool, dry and out of sunlight.
Consistency matters more than timing. Calcium and vitamin C both work on ongoing sufficiency rather than on any single dose, so taking it at the same point in your day is easier to keep up than optimising the hour.
Dose, safety and interactions
215mg is a deliberately moderate serving. The UK reference intake for adults is 700mg a day from all sources, and average UK dietary intake sits around 800–900mg. This serving takes a typical adult to roughly 1,100mg total.
For context, the NHS advises that more than 1,500mg a day from supplements may cause stomach pain and diarrhoea, and the tolerable upper intake level from all sources is 2,500mg a day. This serving is well inside both.
There is a second reason not to go higher: calcium absorption efficiency falls above about 500mg in a single dose. A moderate serving is used more efficiently than a large one, so more is not simply better.
Interactions and who should check first
Calcium reduces absorption of several medicines — certain antibiotics (tetracyclines and quinolones), thyroid medication, bisphosphonates and iron supplements. Leave at least two hours either side, and ask your pharmacist if you are unsure.
Speak to your GP before use if you have kidney problems, a history of kidney stones, high blood calcium, an overactive parathyroid gland, or sarcoidosis.
