Directions
Take two (2) to three (3) tablets daily. Typically taken with food. Do not exceed the recommended dose.
At two tablets that is 160mg of silymarin and 8,000mg of seed equivalent a day. At three, 240mg of silymarin and 12,000mg of seed equivalent. We state this because the "4000mg" on the front of the pack is a per-tablet figure, and almost no page tells you what the daily total actually comes to.
What the 4000mg actually means
It is not 4,000mg of anything in the tablet. A 10mm tablet could not hold it.
A 40:1 extract means roughly forty parts of dried milk thistle seed went in for every one part that came out. So the 100mg of extract in each tablet is derived from about 4,000mg of seed, and that is where the headline figure comes from. It is a legitimate and standard way to express an extract — but it describes what went into the process, not what came out of it.
The figure that does describe what came out
Silymarin. It is the group of compounds milk thistle extracts are characterised and standardised by, and it is the only number that lets you compare two products honestly.
Ours is standardised to 80% silymarin, which is the top of the commercial range — 30%, 50% and 70% are all common. So each tablet carries 80mg of silymarin, and that figure is on this page because we have it on the specification.
Here is why that matters more than the big number. Two products can both say "4000mg" on the front and differ enormously:

Same front-of-pack number in every row. Up to an eightyfold difference in the row that counts. The first row is the one to watch — a "4000mg" product with no extract ratio stated is almost certainly ground seed rather than an extract, and an extract ratio is a selling point nobody with one leaves off a label.
Five questions to ask about any milk thistle
1. Is an extract ratio stated? No ratio means ground seed. That is a legitimate product, it is just not comparable on milligrams with an extract.
2. What is the silymarin percentage? If it is not on the label or the page, ask. This is the question most sellers cannot answer.
3. What does that come to in milligrams? Percentage times extract weight. 80% of 100mg is 80mg. Do the sum rather than trusting the front of the pack.
4. Which part of the plant? Milk thistle extracts are made from the seed. Aerial parts and whole-herb material are different and carry far less silymarin.
5. Is the species named? It should read Silybum marianum. Blessed thistle (Cnicus benedictus) and holy thistle are different plants entirely and are sometimes confused with it.
No Authorised Claims Does Not Mean No Research
You will notice this page tells you nothing about what milk thistle does. That is not because nothing is known — milk thistle is among the most heavily studied botanicals in Europe. It is because getting a health claim authorised in Great Britain is a process most ingredients never go through.

Declared in full. We are not going to call this a no-filler product, because it is not one — 100mg of extract is a speck, and a tablet needs bulk and flow agents to exist at all. Is there really 4000mg in each tablet?
No, and no product claiming it has. A 10mm tablet cannot hold 4,000mg of anything. There is 100mg of a 40:1 extract, which is derived from roughly 4,000mg of seed — that is where the figure comes from. The 80mg of silymarin is what is actually in the tablet.
What is silymarin?
It is the group of compounds that milk thistle seed extracts are characterised and standardised by, and the marker used to grade them. An extract described as "80% silymarin" has been assayed and standardised to that level. Beyond that we are not able to tell you anything about what it does — no claim for it is authorised in Great Britain.
Is 80% a high standardisation?
It is at the top of the commercial range. 30%, 50% and 70% are all widely sold, and plain ground seed carries only a few percent. If you are comparing products, this percentage multiplied by the extract weight is the comparison to make.
Two tablets or three?
Either is within the stated directions. Two gives 160mg of silymarin a day, three gives 240mg. Do not exceed three. If you are unsure which suits you, ask a pharmacist — they can take your own circumstances into account, which a web page cannot.
Is it vegan?
Yes. Suitable for both vegans and vegetarians, confirmed on our supplier's specification. The extract is a plant seed extract and the excipients are mineral and plant-derived.
Why does it have fillers when your capsules don't?
Because it is a tablet. Tablets are compressed, and 100mg of extract cannot be compressed into a tablet on its own — it needs bulking and flow agents to hold together and to run through the machine. Capsules just need filling, which is why those can be the active and the shell alone.
Which pack size should I buy?
At two tablets a day you will use about 730 a year; at three, about 1,095. So 120 tablets is two months at two daily, 200 is a little over three, and 365 is six. Larger packs cost less per tablet, so buy the size you would realistically get through.
