How to take it

One tablet daily, with a meal.

That is 500 million CFU a day. Do not exceed the recommended dose. The label says one a day and so does the manufacturer's specification, so one a day is what we tell you — even though you will find listings elsewhere, including some of our own older ones, suggesting up to three.

Take it with food rather than on an empty stomach. Store cool, dry and out of direct light. Do not keep the bottle on a sunny windowsill or next to the kettle.

No Authorised Claims Does Not Mean No Research

You will notice this page tells you nothing about what Lactobacillus acidophilus does. That is not because nothing is known — it is one of the most studied bacteria in the world, first isolated in 1900. It is because getting a health claim authorised in Great Britain is a process most ingredients never go through, and probiotics have not been through it at all.

Authorisation takes five to ten years and is funded by whoever stands to profit from the claim. No company will spend six figures proving a claim for a bacterium any competitor can then culture and sell. So probiotics sit outside the register regardless of the evidence behind them — and in January 2024 the government confirmed in Parliament that it had not received a single application for a strain-specific claim.

Why there are excipients in it at all. 500 million freeze-dried bacteria weigh almost nothing. You cannot press a tablet out of that, and you could not pick it up if you could. The cellulose and dicalcium phosphate give the tablet its body so it can be compressed to a consistent 8 mm and survive being handled, bottled and posted.

Magnesium stearate and silicon dioxide stop the powder sticking to the tooling during compression. They are used in fractions of a percent. Any manufacturer who tells you a pressed tablet contains only the active is either using something else they have not named, or is not pressing tablets.

What the manufacturer's specification does confirm:

The species and the specific strain (LA-G80). The count of 500,000,000 CFU per tablet. The complete ingredient list. Suitability for vegans and vegetarians. Non-GMO status. A declaration of nil against each of the 14 named allergens. The tablet format and the storage conditions. It is manufactured in the United Kingdom.

What it does not yet cover

The specification states 500,000,000 CFU per tablet but does not state whether that is the count at manufacture or the count guaranteed to the end of shelf life. For a live culture product that is the single most important distinction there is, and we are not going to paper over it. We have asked the manufacturer for the figure and the stability data behind it. When we have it, it goes on this page and you will see it change.

We also do not hold an independent third-party assay confirming the live count in a finished tablet. The 500 million figure is the manufacturer's, not an outside laboratory's. Nor do we hold heavy metal or microbiological testing specific to this product, as we do for some others in the range.

If any of that matters to your decision — and on a probiotic it reasonably might — buy a small pack first, or ask us where the gaps are up to before you commit to a large one.

Before you take this

Speak to your doctor first if you are immunocompromised, seriously ill, recovering from surgery, or have a central venous catheter. Live bacteria are not appropriate for everyone, and this is the one genuine safety point on this product rather than a box-ticking caution.

Not for under 18s. Not for pregnancy or breastfeeding. If you are taking antibiotics, or any prescribed medication, check with your pharmacist about timing.

We state no health claims because there are none to state. The position on the word probiotic was confirmed by the government in Parliament in January 2024: it is treated as a non-specific health claim, usable only alongside an authorised claim for the named strain, and no application for any strain had been received. We name the strain, as the rules require, and we attach no benefit to it.
