We state that plainly because betaine HCl is sometimes marketed as though it were derived from beetroot or another plant source. Betaine occurs naturally in beetroot, wheat and spinach, but the material sold as betaine HCl in supplement form is a synthesised salt. Both are the same compound; only one is honest about where it came from.

The hydrochloride portion is what makes it strongly acidic in solution — pH 0.8 to 1.2 by specification. That property is central to how the material must be handled, and it is covered in the safety section below.

Granules, Not Powder

This is a crystalline material that passes 20 mesh, which is a considerably coarser granule than the 40 or 80 mesh of most milled supplement powders. In the hand it looks and feels much like granulated sugar — white to off-white, free-flowing, distinctly crystalline rather than floury.

Two practical consequences. It dissolves readily — solubility is 647g per litre at 25°C — so it goes into water without stirring for long. And it is hygroscopic, meaning it draws moisture from the air. Left open it will clump. That is the material behaving as specified, not a defect, and it is why the pouch must be resealed properly.

2. Dissolve it fully in a large glass of water. Never take it dry, and never hold it in the mouth — the solution is strongly acidic.
