Food supplement: not a medicine

Chlorella is a food. It is sold here as a food supplement and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition. Food supplements should not replace a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

Taking an anticoagulant medicine such as warfarin? Read this first

Chlorella naturally contains vitamin K, which can change how anticoagulant medicines work. Label data for commercial chlorella products, collated in a 2020 review in Nutrients, put vitamin K at roughly 0.3 to 3.5mg per 100g, which works out at around 6 to 70 micrograms in four tablets, and it varies by batch. Do not start chlorella without speaking to your doctor or pharmacist.

Check with your GP or pharmacist first if you

are pregnant or breastfeeding, take any regular medicine (including medicines that act on the immune system), have a medical condition, or have a known allergy to algae or moulds. Not suitable for under 18s.

Why this page makes no health claims

In Great Britain a supplement seller may only use health claims that appear on the official nutrition and health claims register. Chlorella has none. That is not the same as "no research": chlorella has been cultivated as a food since the 1960s and is one of the most studied microalgae. It reflects the fact that getting one claim authorised typically takes 5 to 10 years and a dossier costing £100K+, and nobody has done that for chlorella.

Nutrients found in chlorella, such as iron and vitamin B12, do have authorised claims, but only where a verified analysis shows at least 15% of the daily reference value in the daily serving. Chlorella's nutrient content swings widely from batch to batch, and we do not publish figures we have not verified, so we use none of those claims either. What you get instead is a straight specification.

Supplier CoA specification

55%+ protein

Our chlorella is bought to a specification of not less than 55% protein by weight. That puts it inside the 50 to 72% range reported for commercial chlorella in a 2020 review of 13 products, and the protein contains all nine essential amino acids.

Why it matters even if you are not counting protein: the protein figure is the quickest purity check there is. Every gram of carrier, starch or filler added to chlorella drags its protein percentage down, so a certified minimum of 55% is hard to hit with diluted material. Our CoA lists the carrier as none.

275mg+

protein in each 500mg tablet

550mg+

in 2 tablets a day

1.1g+

in 4 tablets a day

Straight numbers: at tablet servings that is a gram or so of protein a day, so this is a protein-dense green food, not a replacement for a protein shake. 55% is the minimum the supplier certifies, not a lab result for an individual batch.

What is chlorella?

Chlorella 500mg tablets from Charge Products are pure Chlorella vulgaris: a single-celled freshwater green microalga, first described by the Dutch microbiologist Martinus Beijerinck in 1890 and farmed as a food since the 1960s. Each cell is a tiny green sphere packed with chlorophyll, which is why the tablets are such a deep green.

If you want to buy chlorella tablets UK buyers can check properly, the questions that matter are simple. Is the cell wall cracked? What else is in the tablet? Who packed it, and where? On this page: yes, nothing, and us, in Southend-on-Sea.

Chlorella is eaten as a whole food. Nothing is extracted or concentrated: the alga is grown, harvested, dried, milled to crack the cell wall and pressed. By dry weight it is mostly protein, with fibre, fats, chlorophyll and carotenoid pigments making up most of the rest.

You can order chlorella UK-wide here in four pack sizes, or through our eBay listing, so where to buy chlorella UK stock with a checkable track record is a short answer. This is a food supplement, not a medicine.

First-time buyer guide

Expect the smell. Pure chlorella smells green and slightly of seaweed. A tablet that smells of nothing has usually been coated or blended. Start at 2 a day for a week, then move up to 4 if you want to. Take them with a meal and a full glass of water. Green stools are normal: that is chlorophyll passing through. Start with the 100 pack, which is 25 days at 4 a day, then drop to a larger pack for a lower price per tablet.

Chlorella vs spirulina: the real differences

  Chlorella (this product) Spirulina
What it is True green alga, Chlorella vulgaris Blue-green cyanobacterium, Arthrospira platensis
Where it grows Fresh water Alkaline, salty water
Cell wall Rigid: needs cracking before use No rigid wall: no cracking step
Main pigment Chlorophyll (deep green) Phycocyanin (blue-green)
Protein by dry weight About 50 to 70% About 55 to 70%
Vitamin B12 Present in some products, highly variable Mostly an inactive B12 look-alike
Taste Grassy, green Earthy, more savoury

Understanding chlorella

Why the cell wall is cracked

A chlorella cell is wrapped in a tough, fibrous wall that human digestion does not break down well. Milling the dried alga fractures that wall so the cell contents are exposed. Commercial cracked-wall products reviewed in 2020 reported digestibility in the region of 75 to 85%. "Cracked cell wall" and "broken cell wall" mean the same thing.

What is actually in it

Across 13 commercial chlorella products in the same review, protein ran from about 50 to 72g per 100g dry weight, with 5 to 18g of fibre. Ours is specified at 55% or more. Four tablets are 2g of chlorella, so a little over 1g of protein. The protein itself contains all the essential amino acids, as a 2023 review of chlorella's macronutrients sets out.

Why we quote no vitamin or mineral figures

Chlorella takes its mineral content from the water it grows in. In the 2020 review, declared iron ranged from 10mg to well over 1,000mg per 100g between products, and only 4 of 13 declared any vitamin B12 at all. A single "typical" number on a product page would be a guess. We would rather say so.

What "CGF" means

Chlorella Growth Factor is a trade term for the hot-water-soluble fraction of chlorella: a mix of nucleic acids, peptides and polysaccharides. It is part of whole chlorella, so it is in these tablets, but it is not a standardised compound and we do not quote a CGF percentage.

Supplier certificate of analysis: specification limits

Heavy metals are the first thing informed buyers ask about with any algae product, because algae take up whatever is in their growing water. These are the limits our supplier certifies every batch against, next to the legal maximum for food supplements in Great Britain.

Parameter Our supplier limit GB legal maximum
Lead ≤0.5 mg/kg 3.0 mg/kg
Cadmium ≤0.5 mg/kg 1.0 mg/kg
Mercury ≤0.1 mg/kg 0.10 mg/kg
Arsenic ≤0.5 mg/kg No limit set for supplements
Benzo[a]pyrene ≤10 µg/kg 10 µg/kg
PAH4 (sum of four PAHs) ≤50 µg/kg 50 µg/kg

These are specification limits from the supplier certificate of analysis, not individual batch results. Legal maximums are those for food supplements under assimilated Regulation (EC) 1881/2006. Trade buyers can request the current certificate.

Chlorella tablets: frequently asked questions

What are chlorella tablets?
Chlorella tablets are compressed Chlorella vulgaris, a single-celled freshwater green microalga. Each Charge Products tablet contains 500mg of cracked cell wall chlorella and nothing else. It is a food supplement, not a medicine.

How much protein is in chlorella tablets?
Our chlorella is supplied to a specification of not less than 55% protein by weight, so each 500mg tablet contains at least 275mg of protein and 4 tablets contain at least 1.1g. The protein contains all nine essential amino acids. At tablet servings it is a protein-dense food rather than a replacement for a protein shake.

Is your chlorella checked for heavy metals?
Yes. The supplier certificate of analysis sets limits of 0.5mg/kg for lead, arsenic and cadmium and 0.1mg/kg for mercury, plus limits for PAHs and microbiology. The lead limit is one sixth of the legal maximum for food supplements in Great Britain. These are specification limits, not individual batch results.

What does cracked cell wall chlorella mean?
Chlorella has a rigid outer cell wall that people digest poorly. Cracked cell wall (also called broken cell wall) chlorella has been mechanically milled before tableting so the contents of the cell are accessible. It is a processing step, not an additive.

How many chlorella tablets should I take a day?
Take 2 to 4 tablets a day with water, ideally with food. New users usually start at 2 a day for the first week. Do not exceed the amount stated on the pack.

What do chlorella tablets taste and smell like?
Chlorella has a strong green, slightly grassy or seaweed-like smell and taste. That is normal for pure chlorella. Swallowing the tablets whole with water avoids most of the taste, which is the main reason people choose tablets over powder.

Which pack size should a first-time buyer choose?
The 100-tablet pack is the trial size and lasts 25 days at 4 tablets a day. If you already take chlorella daily, the 300 and 500-tablet packs cost the least per tablet.

How fast is UK delivery?
Orders placed before 3:30pm Monday to Friday are dispatched the same day from our Southend-on-Sea unit. UK delivery is free on orders over £10.

What is your returns policy?
Unused, sealed products can be returned within 30 days of delivery. Contact us first with your order number. This is on top of your statutory rights.

Are these chlorella tablets vegan?
Yes. The only ingredient is Chlorella vulgaris, a plant-like microalga. There is no gelatin, no animal-derived ingredient and no artificial colour or flavour.

What is the difference between chlorella and spirulina?
Chlorella is a true green alga with a rigid cell wall that has to be cracked. Spirulina is a blue-green cyanobacterium with no rigid wall. Chlorella is higher in chlorophyll; spirulina contains the blue pigment phycocyanin. They are different organisms, not two grades of the same thing.

Is chlorella a reliable source of vitamin B12 for vegans?
Not on its own. Published testing shows the B12 content of commercial chlorella varies enormously between products and batches, and some contain very little. We do not declare a B12 figure for this product, so vegans should keep using a dedicated B12 supplement or fortified foods.

Are there any authorised health claims for chlorella?
No. There are no authorised health claims for chlorella on the Great Britain nutrition and health claims register. We sell it on specification only and make no claims about what it does. It is a food supplement, not a medicine.

Can I take chlorella with anticoagulant medicines such as warfarin?
Speak to your doctor or pharmacist first. Chlorella naturally contains vitamin K, which can affect how anticoagulant medicines work, and the amount varies from batch to batch.

Do you supply chlorella tablets wholesale in the UK?
Yes. We supply chlorella 500mg tablets to UK retailers, practitioners and brands in bulk quantities above the listed retail packs, from UK-held stock. Send the quantity you need through the contact page for a trade price.

Can I buy bulk chlorella tablets for white label or private label?
Yes. Loose bulk tablets can be supplied for repacking under your own brand. You remain responsible for your own label compliance as the food business operator named on the pack.

Is a certificate of analysis available for trade buyers?
Yes. The supplier certificate of analysis for the current batch is available to trade customers on request before ordering.

Are the tablets suitable for repacking or contract packing?
Yes. They are hard-compressed 500mg tablets that travel and count well through standard tablet-counting equipment. Tell us your pack format and we will confirm suitability.

What is the minimum order and lead time for wholesale chlorella?
There is no fixed published minimum: tell us the quantity and we will quote. Stock held in the UK is normally dispatched the same or next working day; larger volumes are quoted with a lead time.
