The colour check — what pure CoQ10 looks like

Ubiquinone is a strongly coloured molecule. At 98%+ purity it is a deep yellow-orange, close to the colour of turmeric or a dried apricot. That colour is not a dye or an additive; it is the compound itself, and it is the easiest quality check there is because it needs no equipment.

Watch for yellow corn flour. Some suppliers bulk out CoQ10 with yellow corn flour (maize starch) or a similar pale carrier. Corn flour costs pence per kilo, is yellow enough to pass at a glance, and every gram of it pushes the powder from orange toward pale yellow. Rub a little between your fingers: pure CoQ10 is crystalline and slightly waxy; corn flour is soft, dusty and floury. If it looks like custard powder, it has been cut.

The market sells all three as "CoQ10 powder", and the pale version is not a fraud — a 10% water-dispersible CoQ10 is a legitimate ingredient with its own uses. The problem is when it is sold as though it were pure. A pale, water-dispersible powder is 90% something else, and that something else is usually a starch or cyclodextrin carrier. The colour drops with the CoQ10 content, so the paler the powder, the less CoQ10 you are paying for. Ask any seller for the assay figure on the certificate; if the answer is "100% pure" with no number behind it, the colour will tell you what the certificate does not.

What CoQ10 powder is

Coenzyme Q10 (ubidecarenone, ubiquinone, CAS 303-98-0, C₅₉H₉₀O₄, molecular weight 863.36) is a fat-soluble quinone present in every cell of the body and in foods including meat, oily fish and whole grains. Commercial CoQ10 is produced by microbial fermentation, which is why the material is vegan. This is the oxidised form, ubiquinone — the form used in most published research and most supplements. The reduced form, ubiquinol, is a different product; the two interconvert in the body.

Because ubiquinone is fat-soluble, it is poorly absorbed from an empty stomach and best taken with a meal containing fat — a point made consistently in the pharmacokinetic literature, including Bhagavan and Chopra's 2006 review of CoQ10 absorption. That is also why "water-soluble" CoQ10 products exist: they load a small amount of CoQ10 onto a carrier so it disperses in water. How to use it

1. Weigh it. 100–200mg a day is typical. Use milligram scales — 100mg of crystalline powder is a small pinch and cannot be judged by eye.
2. Take it with fat. With a meal containing fat, or stirred into a teaspoon of warm oil. Do not stir it into water; it will float.
3. Formulating? It dissolves in oil warmed to around 50°C and can precipitate on cooling — re-warm and shake. For dry-fill capsules, no carrier is needed.
4. Reseal. Fold the pouch closed and keep it out of light. Orange is right; brown means it has oxidised.
