The six authorised claims — register wording

These are the health claims authorised for niacin (vitamin B3) on the GB Nutrition and Health Claims Register. Nicotinamide is a permitted form of niacin, and two capsules supply 500mg niacin equivalent against a 16mg NRV, so every claim applies. The wording is the register's.

Six, not seven or ten. "Cognitive function" is not a niacin claim — it belongs to iron, zinc and iodine — and you will not find it here. NMN has no claims at all.

What each claim means

Reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Niacin is the raw material for NAD+, which is what cells use to turn food into usable energy. When intake is low that conversion runs less efficiently, and tiredness is one of the first signs.

Normal energy-yielding metabolism. Every step of breaking carbohydrate, fat and protein down into ATP needs NAD+ to carry electrons. Niacin keeps that supply topped up — it is the vitamin behind the process, not a stimulant.

Normal functioning of the nervous system. Nerve cells are among the most energy-hungry in the body and rely on the same NAD+-driven metabolism to fire and to maintain their myelin; niacin deficiency presents neurologically for exactly this reason.

Normal psychological function. Mood, concentration and mental stamina depend on brain energy supply and on neurotransmitter synthesis, both of which use NAD+-dependent enzymes.

Maintenance of normal skin. Skin cells turn over quickly and need NAD+ for renewal and for repairing everyday UV damage; nicotinamide is the form used in most skin research.

Maintenance of normal mucous membranes. The linings of the mouth, gut and airways are fast-renewing tissue and depend on the same energy and repair pathways. The register wording is the claim; these paragraphs are how it works, not additional promises.

How NMN and nicotinamide work

NAD+ is the coenzyme every cell uses to move electrons in energy metabolism and to run the sirtuin and PARP enzymes involved in DNA repair. The body does not absorb NAD+ directly; it builds it from precursors, and the two most direct routes both start with a form of vitamin B3.

Nicotinamide is the B3 the body recycles. Used NAD+ breaks down to nicotinamide, and the enzyme NAMPT converts it back — via NMN — into fresh NAD+. That salvage loop is how most NAD+ is maintained day to day, and it is the biochemistry behind the energy-metabolism and tiredness-and-fatigue claims (Revollo et al., 2004). Because nicotinamide does not activate the receptor that causes flushing, it can be taken at this dose without the hot, red skin that nicotinic acid produces.

NMN is the step after that. It is one enzyme reaction from NAD+, so it enters the pathway downstream of NAMPT — the rate-limiting step. Human trials have examined oral NMN for safety and for markers such as muscle insulin sensitivity and physical performance (Yoshino et al., 2021, Science) (Yi et al., 2023). That is research context, not a claim: NMN has no authorised UK health claim.

Why both: nicotinamide supplies the loop's raw material and carries the authorised claims; NMN enters below the bottleneck. They are the same pathway at two points, which is the reason NAD Max exists rather than two separate pots.

Why non-flush B3?
Nicotinamide does not cause the skin flushing that nicotinic acid does at this dose. 250mg of nicotinic acid would be noticeably uncomfortable; 250mg of nicotinamide is not.

Why two capsules in the morning?
The label serving is two capsules — 1,000mg of active in total — taken together in the morning. Do not exceed two: 500mg a day of nicotinamide is the UK Expert Group's guidance level for supplemental intake.

Is the NMN third-party tested?
Yes. The NMN raw material is tested by Eurofins Scientific by HPLC, and the current figure is 99.94%. The nicotinamide is supplied on a manufacturer's certificate of analysis. Both are available on request.

Does NMN have UK health claims?
